“Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: See, the virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel.” - Isaiah 7:14 CSB
The prophet Isaiah delivered this word from the Lord to King Ahaz during a time when he feared the attack of surrounding armies that might overthrow his kingdom. The Lord promised that these attacks would not prevail so long as Ahaz stood firm in his faith and believed in the Lord. Like the Lord promised to Abram to bless those who bless him and to curse those who curse him, we see the Lord being faithful to that through this situation confirming that He would not allow those intending to stand in the way of His chosen people to prosper in their efforts.
This prophetic word about the coming Jesus and the naming of Him as Immanuel (Emmanuel) which means God with us, was speaking to King Ahaz that through faith, he and his people had Immanuel in their lineage. That they could rest easy against the storm they were in knowing that God was with them. We too can rest easy in the troubles and storms that we face today knowing that we have the promise of God with us through what Jesus has done on the cross.
