“Then the angel told her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.’” - Luke 1:30-32 CSB

Different from much of what we have seen so far, word from God through His prophets to the people about the coming Messiah, in this passage we get to see a visitation of an angel of the Lord to Mary, the mother of Jesus.  I cannot even imagine what that would be like, to have an angel of the Lord step into my life and tell me that I am going to be the mother to the very Son of God.  That I am going to carry and bring into the world the very person who the prophets have spoken of would come to redeem us and to bring peace to the nations.  How crazy that had to be for Mary to hear that from God.

When Mary was called, she was not a royal woman, not a woman with a priestly or majestic lineage.  Mary was just like you and me.  An ordinary person just going about her life, trying to do the best that she can.  Notice what the angel said to her in the midst of her just going through life: that she has found favor with God.  In the state she was in at that time, culturally speaking, Mary was in no position to be having a child, let alone the child of God.  This should really help us to all understand that God really doesn’t concern Himself with our qualifications when He is asking us to do His work, rather He brings His calling to us along with everything we will need to be successful in serving Him.
